Sunnyside Music Fest Returns to Chaffee Park
A Neighborhoods Labor of Love
“By the neighbors, for the neighbors”, that’s been the motto of the founders and board members of Sunnyside Music Festival since its inception 19 years ago. Humble beginnings, the fest began in a neighbor's backyard with 2 bluegrass bands, 1 keg, 50 people, and about 20 dogs. Through grassroots organizing and a neighborhood full of music lovers, the event has grown to a 13,000 person, day-long celebration of diverse bands, local food, artisan vendors, craft beverages, and family fun.
The 2019 lineup showcases a diverse range of acts, spanning genres like funk, Chicha, bluegrass, and soul and features musicians from Colorado with something to say. Whether it’s Don Chicharrón's frustration over continual school shootings, Bonnie and the Clydes shedding light on the lack of drinkable water in Flint, or YaSi speaking up against the way the US is treating other nations, music lovers are sure to find something to love.
The Festival is FREE to all, but also provides financial support to local youth music programs. In 2019 Sunnyside Music Fest donated $6,000 to young musicians in Colorado thanks to the generous support of local business sponsors and beer drinkers on the day of the festival. With the change in Denver’s liquor laws, Sunnyside Music Festival will say goodbye to the days of beer gardens and open the park to dancing with a cold beverage in hand.
Over the years the festival has grown, but some things have remained the same, the promise to have local bands, amazing food, and cold beer for all.
